Open Source Philosophy

Our Open Source Manifesto

Why We Build in the Open

We believe that foundational technology should be open.

Open ecosystems move faster. They enable collaboration across companies, researchers, and developers. They create trust, transparency, and reproducibility.

Many of the most important technologies in computing exist today because people chose to build them in the open. We want to contribute to that tradition.

Our Model: Open Core

We follow an open-core model.

The core engines and infrastructure of our platform are open source. Anyone should be able to inspect them, use them, and build on them.

At the same time, building and maintaining high-quality engineering software requires a sustainable business. Our commercial offerings fund continued development of the open ecosystem.

What We Keep Open

We believe the following should generally be open:

  • Core engines
The fundamental technology that powers the ecosystem.
  • Developer infrastructure
SDKs, libraries, and tools that enable people to build on the platform.
  • Standards and interoperability layers
File formats, APIs, and reference implementations that allow tools to work together.

These are the pieces that benefit most from collaboration and community participation.

What We Build Commercially

Our commercial products focus on making professional users dramatically more productive. Rather than restricting the core technology, we build tools that provide:

  • Integrated workflows
  • Automation and infrastructure
  • Collaboration features
  • AI-enhanced solutions
  • Managed services and support

Our goal is simple:

The open tools should be powerful. The commercial tools should make them effortless.

Our Principles

The core must remain usable

Developers should be able to install the core tools, build designs, and run workflows without needing paid features.

Commercial value should come from acceleration, not restriction

We aim to create value by saving time and reducing complexity, not by artificially limiting open-source capabilities.

Ecosystems are more important than lock-in

A healthy ecosystem creates more value for everyone. We prioritize interoperability and openness wherever possible.

Open source is a responsibility

When we open source software, we commit to maintaining it, documenting it, and supporting a healthy community around it.

Our Commitment

We are committed to building technology that is:

  • Open at the foundation
  • Powerful for developers
  • Sustainable as a business
  • Collaborative as an ecosystem

We believe this approach leads to better technology, stronger communities, and faster innovation.
